I remember the first time I intentionally set a goal. I was in College back in the 70's - daydreaming during a required and otherwise boring management class. I had no idea that what was about to happen would change my life forever after in many wonderful ways.
This day the professor asked us to think about what we wanted to accomplish in the next two, five, and in ten years. He went on to have us write out our answers and plan to share them with the class.
Someone asked him what he meant, and he said, "Goals. I'm asking you to think about and write out your near-term, mid-term, and long-term goals".
I didn't have a clue what my goals were. I wasn’t goal planner. I had no goal action plan. At that time, I’d never heard of goal management, and certainly didn’t think of myself as an effective goal manager. In fact, I didn’t know a thing about planning goals or goal planning. Neither did most of my classmates. All we knew was we only had two minutes to jot down our answers. I said a quick little prayer, "Lord, help me with this one", and began writing.
Little did I suspect the power and value in this lesson.
Within two years, I wanted to graduate from college. And not just graduate. I wanted to graduate with highest honors. Within five years - I wanted to be earning $50,000/year. Within ten - to be a Vice-President in charge of an Information Technology department.
Why those goals?
Because I only spent two minutes (actually less than one) thinking about them. Some other time I’ll tell you about the perils of setting hasty goals.
So, what's this got to do with you? Why's this such a big deal?
Well… more important than anything else - the exercise taught the magic of written goals. Next, it demonstrated how it’s much easier (and a lot more fun) to achieve a goal you can see in your mind's eye. Before that moment, I spent most of my days wandering aimlessly from minute to minute, hour to hour, day to day.... And most important of all – the exercise would soon show me (and you, too) the power of the subconscious mind.
If you are searching for [[Keyword]], want to become a goal pro, and don’t know about the power of the subconscious mind, or writing smart goals - you’re not likely to experience much success with your goal setting program.
I vividly remember asking myself, "How the heck am I going to do those things?”How do I know I picked good goals?", "What do I have to do next?", "Am I the person I need to be to reach those goals?". A host of other thoughts and emotions attacked my senses.
It would be years before I came to grips with most of them. Stuff like:
- How do I go about planning goals?
- What is goal planning?
- Where can I find out more about planning goals? A goal setting tool or goal setting tools?
- Is there any such thing as good goal software?
- What is goal-setting software? Does it have anything to do with time management? Time management software?
- How can I learn more about goal setting planning?
The list went on and on.... What can I say? I was bored.
But that's not why you're reading this, is it?
You came here searching for [[Keyword]]. Given that, I'll bet you really want to find out how to get more out of life. How you can set and achieve your own goals, become a success or at least more successful.
Can you guess what happened with those goals?
If you guessed I achieved them all, you'd be mostly right. I missed graduating with highest honors by a few thousandths of a grade point, but I went on to accomplish the other two goals within the next five years.
That's right. I completed a ten-year plan in less than five years. And by the way - $50K/year in 1981 was good money. Rarely heard of for a kid in his early twenties.
There's a lot more to this story, and I'd love to share it with you (and some other tips I learned along the way) some other time. If you're interested, (click here) and I'll sign you up for a little email series about how your thoughts will make you or break you.

If you've never used personal planning software, you'll be excited to know how valuable a guided goal manager can be. GoalMind 2010's goal setting software imbeds powerful questions that will guide you step-by-step through a comprehensive goal planning process that goes way beyond writing simple SMART goals. GoalMind leads you to consider your innate giftedness and helps you consider each of your goals separately and in combination with each other. GoalMind delivers a complete goal setting system designed for all your life's goals.
I've used the GoalMind goal setting process myself for more than 35 years. It's seen me through twenty-five years of marriage, parenthood, multiple businesses, young adulthood, middle age and recently the beginnings of "Golden Years". The time management software and activity management tools alone have literally saved my sanity and kept me focused through the adoption of young children, business start-up and sale - even the death of my soul mate and the life rewrite that accompanies that.
Most importantly, GoalMind leads you to consider your wishes, wants and desires within the context of the most critical question facing all of us: What does God want you to do with your life.
I've seen no other goal planning tools bold enough to admit a Higher Purpose than personal achievement, nor any goal-setting program literally built around the premise that God designed you on purpose! Many people get involved in goal setting, learn about the SMART goal setting process (SMART is an acronym for simple, measurable, actionable, realistic and timely), set and achieve some goals and still feel hollow and unfulfilled at the end of the exercise. The GoalMind process includes SMART goal thinking and planning and goes well beyond those boundaries to include the dimension of Godly purpose. You're asked and equipped to answer questions about your core being, values, aptitudes and spiritual gifts and you're guided to include those in your personal planning efforts.
